CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES EXPECTS RECORD 725,000 CHILDREN TO SAIL ON ‘FUN SHIPS’ IN 2013
The number of children vacationing this year aboard Carnival Cruise Lines’ “Fun Ships” is expected to reach a record 725,000 – roughly double the number kids carried just a decade ago.
“At Carnival, we take ‘fun’ very seriously and the ‘Fun Ships’’ numerous kid-friendly amenities, enthusiastic youth counselors and spacious state-of-the-art play areas provide the ultimate family vacation,” said Gerry Cahill, Carnival president and CEO.
Carnival, which carries more kids than any other cruise line, offers the cruise industry’s top-rated children’s programs — Camp Carnival, for kids ages 2 to 11, Circle “C,” catering to the 12- to 14-year-old set, and Club O2, geared toward 15- to 17-year-olds – with supervised activities and dedicated staff for each group.
In addition to a full schedule of fun, morning-til-night activities, Camp Carnival features such amenities as indoor play areas – some as large as 5,500 square feet — stocked with a variety of games and toys. Arts and crafts centers, “activity walls,” indoor climbing mazes computer labs, also featured on many vessels, while on-board programming emphasizing reading, art, music, geography, physical fitness is available fleetwide.
With Circle “C,” 12- to 14-year olds truly have a place to call their own, with modern facilities featuring a dance floor with high-tech sound and lighting system, plasma-screen TVs displaying movies and music videos, a touch-screen jukebox, gaming pods and more. Circle “C” activities include everything from sports such as basketball, volleyball, ping-pong and various water games to late-night movies and “swimming under the stars” pool parties. Activities are listed in a special edition of Fun Times, printed daily.
Available on all 24 “Fun Ships,” Club O2 was developed in partnership with the Coca-Cola Company and encompasses a variety of programming, as well as teen directors and spacious teen clubs offering a memorable setting for activities or just hanging out.
The teen clubs include a dance floor with a DJ, a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, plasma TVs, a “Coke-tail” lounge serving non-alcoholic specialty drinks, a library with teen-oriented books and magazines, a 16-monitor “video wall,” gaming pods, music listening stations and more.
Throughout the voyage, teens can enjoy activities such as karaoke sessions, theme parties, late-night movies, video game contests, basketball, ping-pong and other sporting events. Special teens-only shore excursions and spa treatments are also available.
Kids of all ages can enjoy acres of deck space for Carnival’s outdoor games and activities, and main Lido deck pools offering the line’s signature “Twister” water slides — some as long as 312 feet – along with splash zones, tipping buckets and other “splash-tastic” features.
Additionally, outdoor play areas with mini basketball hoops, jungle gyms and other playground equipment, as well as game rooms offering the latest video and arcade games, are available fleetwide. Carnival Magic and Carnival Breeze also feature SkyCourse, cruising first-ever ropes course, part of the expansive SportSquare open-air recreation area.
When it comes to dining, young cruisers get the full “Fun Ship” treatment, with expanded children’s menus offering a variety of kids’ favorites, as well as a “daily junior special” promising something new and different each day. Carnival’s poolside restaurants house a 24-hour pizzeria, a grille area serving hamburgers and hot dogs and a complimentary soft ice cream and frozen yogurt station.
Also offered is Carnival’s “Bottomless Bubbles” program, which, for a one-time fee, provides unlimited soft drink purchases throughout the cruise for guests under age 18. An adult version is available, as well.
Carnival also features some of the largest staterooms in contemporary cruising with a wide range of accommodation categories, including innovative five-berth, two-bath staterooms on Carnival Dream, Carnival Magic and Carnival Breeze. Many staterooms are inter-connecting, ideal for large families or family gatherings.
