3,006-PASSENGER CARNIVAL SPLENDOR: LARGEST ‘FUN SHIP’ EVER DEPLOYED ON THE WEST COAST

MIAMI – The largest Carnival Cruise Lines ship ever deployed on the West Coast, the 3,006-passenger Carnival Splendor, offers year-round seven-day Mexican Riviera service from Long Beach, Calif. 

On its seven-day schedule, Carnival Splendor departs the Long Beach Cruise Terminal every Sunday on weeklong cruises to three popular Mexican ports of call — Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.

Carnival Splendor offers a host of resort-style facilities and features, including 22 themed public rooms and areas, myriad full-service and casual dining options, a 21,000-square-foot health and wellness center, children’s programs for three different age groups, including an expansive 5,500-square-foot play area.  Carnival Splendor also offers a sliding sky dome over the mid-ship pool area which houses a massive 270-square-foot LED screen displaying movies, concerts, sporting events and other programming.

PUBLIC ROOMS AND AREAS
Designed by Carnival’s award-winning architect Joe Farcus, Carnival Splendor’s memorable interiors are inspired by “splendid things,” a celebration of the magnificent, lustrous and elegant.  Highlights include El Mojito, a promenade bar evocative of a sidewalk café in Old Havana, with Spanish-style columns, classic hanging lanterns, and terracotta floors; El Morocco, a cabaret lounge that re-creates the famous 1930s New York club with zebra-patterned banquettes, palm trees and murals of Moroccan scenes; and Our House, a sports bar that celebrates a team’s home field advantage, with models of famous stadiums displayed in glass vitrines located around the room.

Other venues include the Red Carpet dance club which, in addition to featuring a striking interior of deep red hues, turns every guest into a celebrity as they walk the VIP line past a series of mannequins waiting in line on the other side of the velvet rope to enter, and The Cool, a live music venue with artwork inspired by jazz innovator Miles Davis, with photos of the trumpeter and sheet music of his compositions.

DINING OPTIONS
The Carnival Splendor offers a wide variety of formal and casual options at sea, including the stunning Gold Pearl and Black Pearl formal dining rooms with extensive menus and wine lists; a casual poolside restaurant, The Lido, with full breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets and a 24-hour pizzeria, along with a New York-style deli, an Asian specialty station, a grille and a rotisserie; and The Pinnacle, an intimate reservations-recommended steakhouse serving prime U.S.D.A. dry-aged beef, chops, seafood and other cuisine.

Dining room menus also include vegetarian dishes and children’s menus, as well as Spa Carnival Fare, delicious health-conscious menu items that are lower in fat, sodium, cholesterol and calories. The ship also features a patisserie and a sushi bar, as well as complimentary 24-hour room service and ice cream and frozen yogurt. 

ON-BOARD PROGRAMS
‘CAMP CARNIVAL,’ ‘CIRCLE C,’ ‘CLUB O2’– Building upon Carnival’s distinction as the family cruise leader carrying 670,000 children annually, Carnival Splendor offers programming for children in three age groups — “Camp Carnival” for kids ages 2-11, “Circle C” for 12- to 14-year-olds, and “Club O2” for older teens – with expansive facilities, age-appropriate activities and trained youth staff for each group.  

Also featured is a 5,500-square-foot children’s play area – Carnival’s largest — special children’s menus, a kids dining program where children can dine with the youth counselors in the poolside restaurant.   Stroller rental and babysitting services are available, as well.  Carnival Splendor also houses four swimming pools, including a children’s wading pool and a main pool offering a 214-foot-long water slide and a water spray park. 

CARNIVAL’S SEASIDE THEATRE- Carnival Splendor also features the line’s popular “Carnival Seaside Theatre,” a massive 270-square-foot LED screen on Lido Deck displaying movies, concerts, sporting events, and other programming, including a “Morning Show” hosted by the ship’s cruise director.  Utilizing the same technology featured in large stadiums and New York’s Times Square, the state-of-the-art entertainment system includes a 70,000-watt sound system, providing concert quality sound, even outdoors.

‘HEALTH AND FITNESS FACILITY’ – Fitness has become an important part of everyday life and guests sailing on the Carnival Splendor can take advantage of the ship’s two-level, 21,000-square-foot Cloud 9 Spa which features a thalassotherapy pool, elaborate thermal suite and 17 private treatment rooms, that serve as the venue for a variety of soothing “European-style” therapies.  A salon offering a variety of hair, nail and make-up services is available, as well. Adjacent to the facility are 68 spa staterooms and suites – a first for the line. 

Adjacent to the Cloud 9 Spa is Serenity, an exclusive adults-only retreat with colorful oversized umbrellas, two jumbo-sized whirlpools and comfortable chaise lounges and sofa.

SPACIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS -   As part of Carnival’s fleetwide stateroom enhancements, all of the Carnival Splendor’s 1,503 staterooms feature the “Carnival Comfort Bed” sleep system, featuring plush mattresses, luxurious duvets, fluffy pillows and high quality sheets and linens. Additionally, Carnival Splendor offers the line’s first spa staterooms and suites adjacent to the expansive two-level Cloud 9 Spa.  In addition to a striking Asian décor, these staterooms offer a number of exclusive amenities and privileges, including unlimited access to the facility.  Accommodations include terrycloth bathrobes along with in-cabin amenity kits with a variety of brand-name product samples for men and women. 

INTERNET CAFÉ, WI-FI ACCESS, CELL PHONE SERVICE – Like all “Fun Ships,” Carnival Splendor offers an Internet café with private workstations featuring flat-screen monitors, along with bow-to-stern Wi-Fi access providing guests with Internet access in all areas of the ship, including their staterooms.  Guests can also make and receive cell phone calls whether the ship is at sea or in port.

Carnival Cruise Lines’ 3,006-passenger Carnival Splendor – the line’s newest and largest ship offering a host of innovations – embarked yesterday on its inaugural seven-day Mexican Riviera cruise from Long Beach, Calif., building upon the company’s distinction as California’s number one cruise operator.

On its new schedule, Carnival Splendor departs the Long Beach Cruise Terminal every Sunday on weeklong voyages to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.

Including Carnival Splendor, the company operates four ships from the West Coast which collectively will carry a record 620,000 guests annually from California ports – more than any other cruise line.     

In anticipation of the Carnival Splendor’s arrival, the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, owned and operated by Carnival’s parent company Carnival Corporation & plc since 2003, has undergone an $8 million upgrade.

Based on information collected by the Office of Economic Research at California State University, Carnival Cruise Lines’ Long Beach operations have a significant impact on the local economy, with $82.4 million in direct expenditures generating an employment impact of 525 jobs with an annual payroll of $18.2 million.  The arrival of Carnival Splendor is expected to generate an additional $14 million in direct annual expenditures – this impact will be immediate.

Carnival Splendor also offers the most elaborate children’s facilities of any “Fun Ship,” including a 5,500-square-foot children’s play area – the largest in the fleet – along with a water spray park and dedicated facilities for ’tweens and teens.  Also featured on Lido Deck is Carnival’s Seaside Theatre, a massive 270-square-foot LED screen displaying movies, concerts, and other programming.

Dining options include four restaurants – two two-level main dining rooms, a 1,400-seat casual poolside eatery featuring a 24-hour pizzeria, and an elegant reservations-only restaurant.  Rounding out the Carnival Splendor’s many diverse features are 22 lounges and bars, a duty-free shopping mall, full casino gambling, and ship-wide Internet access and cell phone service.

In a nod to the Mexican Riviera itinerary of the new Carnival Splendor, a new burrito bar debuted during the ship’s two-day familiarization cruises in San Francisco and Los Angeles last week.

Located within the expansive poolside restaurant, The Lido, the venue allows guests the opportunity select a variety of meats, rice, vegetables and other ingredients and have a custom-made burrito created right before their eyes.

The burrito bar has garnered positive feedback from Carnival Splendor guests and the company is evaluating expanding the concept to other ships in the fleet.

Carnival Cruise Lines, Sixthman and VH1 recently partnered to present “One Splendid Evening,” a special concert event to benefit VH1’s Save The Music Foundation.

The event took place on March 26, 2009, with proceeds going toward restoring instrumental music education in America’s public schools and raising awareness about the importance of music as part of children’s education.

“One Splendid Evening” was held on board the 3,006-passenger Carnival Splendor, the line’s newest and largest ship, while the vessel was docked in Los Angeles.

The evening included captivating performances by Grammy Award winner John Mayer, as well as Jordin Sparks, Gavin Rossdale, Sara Bareilles, O.A.R., Guster, Erin McCarley and DJ Logic.
