Carnival Cruise Line’s wide-ranging sustainability and environmental initiatives were recognized by the Maritime Association of South Carolina which presented the cruise line with its Environmental Stewardship Award during their annual convention held recently in Charleston, S.C. , where the Carnival Fantasy is based year-round.  The Maritime Association of SC is a non-profit trade association whose mission is to promote, protect and advance the interests of the state’s ports and associated businesses throughout the state.

The award, accepted on Carnival’s behalf by Joanie Field, the line’s business development director for South Carolina, honors those companies that demonstrate a true commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation.  Carnival’s local efforts with regard to air quality, wastewater policy and landfill reduction were identified as determining factors in receiving this recognition.  These initiatives include plans to install “scrubber” technology on Carnival Fantasy and other ships that will significantly reduce emissions and a commitment to utilizing the cleanest fuel commercially available.  Additionally, Carnival donates hundreds of items from the Carnival Fantasy – normally destined for landfills – to local charities, churches and other organizations.
